Development of a Trilateral Partnership Between Michigan Tech, AVL, and GM with an Integral Laboratory to Explore and Incubate Innovative Powertrain and Instrumentation Concepts

Project Date:
7/2009-6/2010

Jeremy Worm
Primary Investigator

Sponsor:
University of Michigan-Michigan Initiative for Innovation & Entrepreneurship

The development of a powertrain research laboratory where these concepts will be developed and evaluated, and the commercialized products tested. The new laboratory will serve as the centerpiece of this partnership providing the business partner access to university expertise and facilities, but the partnership will ultimately rely on the combined intellectual and physical resources of the members.

The partnership will explore high risk, but potentially high commercialization value, concepts, and incubate them by providing a mechanism to perform investigative work at Michigan Tech on concept feasibility and potential for commercialization. The exploratory research conducted within this strategic alliance will lead to AVL, GM, Michigan Tech, and jointly owned intellectual property. The incubative structure of the alliance will lead to larger scale developmentprograms in powertrain innovations and instrumentation that will be conducted by the respective groups at the business partners as well as entrepreneurial ventures within, and spun-off from, Michigan Tech.

Michigan Tech's Office of Technology and Economic Development will nurture and manage the commercialization of the combined intellectual property that results from the partnership. Existing IP agreements are in place with GM and agreements will be developed with AVL on estrablishment of this partnership. These funds will be augmented by the donation of test equipment from AVL with a value of $100,000, a donation of engineering services from AVL with a value of $6,000, and $20,000 cash contribution from Michigan Tech, recently received from the Chrysler Foundation for the development of the facility.

This partnership and integral test facility, focused on exploration and innovation, will be a valuable asset for addressing future powertrain technologies and meeting industry, state and national challenges including reduced dependency on fossil fuels, higher established and future proposed CAFE standards, and lower greenhouse gas emmisions. Further advancements to meet these goals will require novel concepts and an improved understanding of the fundamental engineering issues that will be enhanced through advanced analysis tools and instrumentation developed under this partnership.
