A three-dimensional micromechanics-based model will be developed to predict the bulk electromechanical response of a three-phase composite material composed of the fiber, interphase layer, and surrounding polymer matrix. The model will combine aspects of two modeling approaches. The double-inclusion approach is used to predict the mechanical response of a composite material that contains fibers surrounded by an interphase material. The approach of Dunn and Taya predicts the electromechanical properties of fiber/matrix composites with piezoelectric constituents. By combining these approaches, a model will be developed to predict the bulk electromechanical properties of the proposed active fiber composite material.
